The Nickolaou family's five Solgaard carry-on closets: black, sage green, pink, beige, and blue

When you travel as much as our family does, luggage stops being a purchase and starts being a relationship. You learn fast which bags survive the baggage carousel, which zippers give up first, and which suitcases make packing for five people feel less like a military operation.

Our whole family travels with Solgaard. That was not a sponsorship decision. It was a survival decision.

We have had these bags for a year and a half now. In that time they have been to Germany, Austria, England, Portugal, Spain, Japan, and on countless weekend trips across the USA.

Why we switched

I travel constantly for work, and the family comes along whenever we can make it happen. Between the five of us, we burned through bags. Handles snapped. Wheels wobbled.

In New York City, a wheel fell clean off one of our old bags in the middle of a trip. I will not name the brand, because that is not the point. The point is the contrast: when we had an issue with our Solgaard gear, they backed the warranty without a fight and their customer care was amazing. That is how a brand earns you for life.

Solgaard was the first brand where every piece we bought just kept working. Trip after trip, airport after airport. The build quality is the thing you notice first, and it is the thing that keeps you loyal.

What actually sold me

The carry-on closet. Their suitcases open with a built-in shelving system, so you stop living out of a collapsed pile of clothes. For a family that packs and unpacks in hotel rooms constantly, this is the feature that changed everything. The kids can find their own stuff. Devon can find her stuff. Nobody is dumping a suitcase on the bed anymore.

The Optimist backpack. I carry the Solgaard Optimist backpack, designed with Simon Sinek. It rounds out the setup for the days I am not rolling a suitcase.

It holds up. Dragged through terminals, tossed into trunks, squeezed into overhead bins that were already full. Ours still look good and still work like day one.

The part that fits who we are

Solgaard makes their fabric from plastic pulled out of the ocean. Their published number: the equivalent of 229 ocean-bound plastic bottles removed for every item sold.

As a dad of three, that matters to me. I want the kids to see that the things we buy can be part of the solution, not just part of the clutter. We talk about doing right even when nobody is watching. This is a brand that seems to actually live that.

Our fleet

  • Niko: Carry-on closet in black, plus the Solgaard Optimist backpack. This combo has been through more airports than I can count.
  • Devon: Carry-on closet in sage green. Organized, durable, and it still looks sharp.
  • Maddox: Carry-on closet in blue.
  • Kennedy: Carry-on closet in pink.
  • Sawyer: Carry-on closet in beige.

The honest take

Is it the cheapest luggage on the market? No. But we stopped replacing bags every year, which means it has been cheaper for us than buying cheap twice. Buy once, travel for years.

If your family travels the way ours does, or the way you want yours to, this is the gear I would point you to. It earned its place in our house the hard way: by surviving us.
