Nothing like hiking eight billion steps for a photo.
That was my whole caption the day we did Nusa Penida, and I stand by it. Very beautiful island. My sister Maria asked in the comments if I counted the stairs, which tells you everything about the kind of day it was.
We booked the private all-inclusive Instagram tour, the one that strings together the island’s greatest hits in a single day. Nusa Penida sits off the southeast coast of Bali, so the day starts with a boat crossing. Fair warning, the water can move, so if motion is not your friend, plan for it before you board.
First stop: Kelingking Beach. You have seen the photo a thousand times, the cliff that looks exactly like a T-Rex head, and I can confirm it looks exactly like that in person too. Holy stairs, though. The staircase runs down the spine of the cliff toward the beach, steep and narrow, and my legs are still filing complaints. Worth every step. The views are epic, and then you look down and spot giant manta ray shadows gliding through water so blue it looks lit from underneath. That is the moment the whole day pays for itself.

[NIKO: did you go all the way down to the beach, or partway?]

After Kelingking we hit Angel’s Billabong and Broken Beach. [NIKO: what do you remember from these two stops? A line or two on each is all I need.] Broken Beach is the natural arch with the sea pouring through it, the kind of thing that makes you put the phone down for a minute just to look.

The private part of the tour earned its keep all day. No waiting on a group, no herding from stop to stop. The driver handled the island’s roads (an adventure of their own) and the pacing was ours. All-inclusive meant lunch was covered, [NIKO: where did you eat, and what did you have?], and nothing about the logistics touched us all day.
Practical notes: start early, because the famous viewpoints fill up and the light is better in the morning. Bring motion sickness prep for the boat. Wear shoes you can actually climb stairs in, not flip-flops, because Kelingking will test you.
Here is the thing I notice as someone who builds experiences for a living: a day like this only works if the choreography is invisible. Pickup on time, boat on time, the driver knowing which road is a road and which is a suggestion, lunch appearing exactly when the group is fading. When all of that disappears, what is left is the view and the people you are with, and that is the whole point. The best tour I ever take is the one I never have to think about, and this one cleared that bar.
Maria’s question still stands: did anyone count the stairs? If you go, count them, and report back. Your legs will remember the number even if you do not.
