Sea Kayaking the Benagil Caves: Our Favorite Morning in Portugal

If you go to the Algarve, you have to get on the water. That is the whole post. But I will give you the longer version anyway.

We booked a sea kayaking tour to the Benagil caves through Viator (link https://www.viator.com), with a local operator called Xplore Benagil. Booking was simple, confirmation came right through, and the morning of the tour we just showed up at the beach in Benagil ready to paddle.

Nothing prepares you for that coastline from the water. The cliffs are massive, the water is that impossible blue, and then you round a corner and there it is: the Benagil cave, with the sunlight pouring through the opening in the ceiling like something out of a movie. We paddled right inside and just floated there for a while. Sawyer was in awe. Honestly, we all were.

The guides were great with the kids, the pace was relaxed, and the whole thing felt adventurous without ever feeling unsafe. It was the rare excursion that works for a seven-year-old and still feels like a real adventure for the adults.

But here is the thing I will remember longest. It was not really about the cave. It was the five of us doing something completely new together, paddling along a coast none of us had ever seen, laughing when someone’s kayak drifted sideways, all of us quiet at the same time inside that cave. That is the memory. New places are great. New places together are everything.

If you are planning an Algarve trip, book the kayak tour early in your stay. Morning light in the cave is unreal, and going early in the trip gives you something to talk about for the rest of the week.

We booked through Viator here: viator.com (link https://www.viator.com). Look for the Benagil cave kayak tours out of Lagoa. You will not regret it.
