Learning about your kids day…..How?

We all have had those moments.  “How was today at school?” and the response was ‘Good’.   Kids are not wired to recap their day with you and would not even know how.  However, doing a few things would help the conversation going past the one work response so many get.

First, model the behavior.  We have family dinner and this is the time for us to catch up.  During this time, we consistently ask about each other’s days.   Maddox an early adopter to this started asking us about work.  Most scenarios you would want to focus on the kids but to model the behavior we would talk about our days in vivid details.

Second, when we asked the question we asked what was great today and what was something that wasn’t.  This forced the answers not to be one word.

Lastly, they started opening-up.  We started having dialogue about their days, sharing what they learned, and building that ‘trust’ between each other.   (Kennedy also is a computer of information; she has historical facts on every person in history she has learned about)

Don’t be afraid to share your day.  No matter how it went.
