As some of you have seen our recent post on Fortnite rules, we have struggles with what and how much of the media we should consume in our household. It was not until we made certain choices we noticed the benefits of a behavioral shift. In short, the more control we had over it the better the kids responded.
Maddox just turned 8 and increasingly he has been at soccer practice, friends’ houses, etc. by himself. We needed a way to communicate to him/us but was it time for a cell phone? I wanted some piece of mind but didn’t know what step we should take. Entered Relay!
The Relay device is a great anti-screen alternative for kids. It is simple, a 2” by 2” phone that has Wi-Fi and 4G LTE connections. This allows it to work everywhere a normal phone would. Through the app and the device, you can communicate directly to the kids Relay, see their location at a glance, and keep an eye on their devices battery life. On top of all that, the device is super durable, water resistant, it doesn’t have a screen. Since it works like a walkie-talkie it ends up being a ton of fun for the kids.

Christmas was approaching and I came across Relay and decided after some research it was time to purchase both for the kids. So, I selected their custom colors and ordered them. Pricing at $50 per device, you cannot beat this alternative to an actual cell phone.

The burning question is ‘do the kids use the device?’ YES! Since the no screen prevents them from going down the road of downloading mind debilitating apps, they can carry the device with them, communicate to Devon and I, plus we track where they end up going if they are out in the neighborhood. It works like a walk talkie so it brings a whole new element of fun.
If you are looking for a great alternative in the battle of screens. Try Relay, no long-term contracts, affordable, and fun! It has brought simplicity back to childhood in todays tech drive world. Check out the video below.
